my little bird.

Last Friday, I went down to my Mum's with my big brother and my little (nearly 5-month-old) niece Evelyn. I was very lucky in that I got to see her two days a row. That tiny little bird really does make everything in life seem alright. It's funny how someone can do that without having any awareness of it. Seeing my family just makes me feel so safe and full of love.

I love the photo of Evelyn above, being very busy with her toys. She quickly got bored of that though. Her mind is so quick, I'm sure she's going to be a very clever little creature. She was a little grizzly that afternoon, but I managed to get the most smiles out of her :) I think it was the bright colours I was wearing, and the silly noises I was making.

After lunch, we went for a lovely walk in the sunshine. It felt like ages since we'd felt the warmth of the sun on our skin, and we walked around one of my most favourite places. We spent a lot of time here when we were kids. It was lovely to see all the new Spring leaves.

The sun lasted all the way into the evening when I got home, which was lovely. It didn't stick around long though - the weekend was horribly wet. I hope May brings us some sunshine... sick of this miserable weather!

au naturel.

I want to start of by saying I LOVE the theme and look of this month's GlossyBox - the natural box. The box is 100% biodegradable, but I'll be keeping it, as I find the boxes so useful for storing little bits and bobs! All the products inside are organic and/or ethical.

Here are the products I received....

Caudalie Vinosource SOS Thirst-Quenching Serum
I've used this a few times since I got it, and haven't seen a great difference in my skin. My skin is generally a bit crap at the moment though, so it could be that, or it might just need a little longer to really take effect. On the plus side, it hasn't made my skin any worse!

Inika Cosmetics Certified Organic Eye Liner in 11 Sapphire
I LOVE the colour of this! It's pretty much one of my favourite colours. A slightly greeny, deep blue. I wore it all day yesterday and it didn't budge, and it stayed nice and bright. Love it. I'll be using this a lot over the summer I think!

Monu Enriched Body Cream
This smells SO GOOD! It has a fresh, lemony fragrance that I am always attracted to. It's a really thick cream, and a little goes a long way. It feels so luxurious on my skin.

Figs & Rouge Lip Balm
FAVOURITE product in the box. I love the packaging so much, and the smell is amazing! The peppermint and teatree makes it so fresh! I've been using it on my lips and my dry elbows and it works a treat and makes me feel all fresh and zingy! I also put it on a slight burn on my arm, and it made it feel all cool and nice.

Phillip B Drop Dead Straightening Balm
My hair is very thick and unruly, and I found this did nothing to straighten or eradicate friss, although it claims to do so! I think I'll be sticking to Moroccan Oil and John Frieda Full Repair!

Overall I have liked this month's box. I'm a sucker for packaging, so I had fallen for it as soon as I opened the box, although some of the products inside were a bit of a let down. The eyeliner, body cream and balm were bloody great though :)

red letter day.

I haven't done an outfit post in what feels like SO LONG! I mentioned in my disposable memories post that I haven't been feeling great recently.. but today I feel a lot more like myself. I think spending some time with my niece yesterday has helped - babies make everything feel a bit better. Also, I've been eating healthy this week after putting on a bit of weight, so I feel a lot better in my skin.

If you follow me on instagram, you'll know that I was trying to get used to these high shoes I got in the Office sale. I was finding they were a bit slippy and wobbly, but wearing them sith socks solves all those problems! So I think I need to get some pretty frilly socks for when it's finally bare-legs weather again!

I also mentioned this orange-red nailvarnish that kind of matches my favourite lipstick. It's from NYC at Superdrug, and I'm very impressed considering its £1.79 price tag! Also I've joined the Vans club... I resisted for ages, but I just love the look of the all black ones, so I found some second-hand (but still very good quality) ones on ebay! They are the shoes I actually wore today.

I'm at my mum's, about to have lunch with my brother and my niece. MACARONI CHEESE! One of my absolute favourites. I feel so lucky to be spending two days in a row with my tiny bird!

WEARING: SHIRT - RIVER ISLAND SALE • BELT & TIGHTS - PRIMARK • SKIRT - HANDMADE BY ME • SHOES - OFFICE SALE/EBAY VANS

disposable memories.

I've not had a very good day/week/month. I've been feeling pretty awful about myself and my life, but I'm not going to go into the reasons why on my blog. The horrible weather we're having really hasn't helped! I got absolutely soaked through on my way home from a failed mission in town.

However, I did get around to getting my disposable camera developed! I've been taking a photo every now and then for about a year. It really cheered me up to look back on these memories, especially the ones of Elliott and I at the beach, and the photo above is just my favourite ♥

the colour conundrum.

This is a guest post from Megan, a writer and relentless optimist, currently cavorting in New York City but based in beautiful Bristol in the South-West of England. She writes about living with imagination, intent and individual style at Charade.

Colour No.1

For many of you, tips on wearing colour will seem sort of stupid. Colour is part of your day to day clothing language. That red bow in your hair. The bright blue tote. The neon pink sandals.

For some, however, I’d wager that wearing colour is a different matter all together – a gargantuan, anxiety-inducing prospect that breaks you into a cold sweat. Wearing colour is too ‘notice me!’ for you to be comfortable with; and even in the warmer spring and summer days you find yourself swaddled in greys and blacks and browns.

You convince yourself this is ‘classic’. That you pull it off. And I’m sure it is and I’m sure you do. I’ve been there, girl. I’ve been called the ‘Princess of Beige’. And despite numerous protestations from my mother that such a palette washes me out, I still find myself wandering H&M with an armful of greys, creams and caramels convincing myself that it’s just my ‘look’.

But let me let you in on a secret: wearing colour is fun. Just look at Bri Emery [www.designlovefest.com]. And it doesn’t have to be the challenge you think it is. Here is a little colour-spiration to throw into your clothing cocktail. And, as the days get warmer, why not let your wardrobe warm up to match?

Start small.
Colourful socks, a hair pin, a ring, block colour tights or a cardigan are all good ways to slip a little colour into your life. Make a Polyvore set like the one above for inspiration! When you’re feeling braver you can combine a few items together.

Colour No.2

Start simple.
With a bright bag you don’t have to jump head first into colour as you can pair it seamlessly with your existing wardrobe of neutrals. And it might just be the motif that is colourful like this heart tote. A ‘pop’ of colour can be just as eye-catching as a full ensemble.

Colour No.3

Settle on one key element of colour.
Whilst shopping recently I saw a girl in a very close copy of this outfit and I was enamoured. I don’t actually wear a great deal of black but the way she had paired it with the bright yellow Doc Martins made a really strong aesthetic statement – somehow stronger than if she’d been wearing head-to-toe colour. (I added the broach for fun!)

Colour No.4

Practice with pastels!
If you’re a beige beauty then experiment with pastels. Peach is only a hop, skip and jump from beige, and is colourful without being ‘in your face’ bright. When you’re feeling braver I think it makes an interesting colour-combo with minty green.

If you’re finding it impossible to figure out which colours work for you, go shopping with a friend and give up the reigns to them. Tell them you want some colour in your life and commit to buying at least one thing they pick for you – and try on everything, even if you aren’t sure at first. Be brave, we’re rooting for you to add a little more colour to the world!

So, friends, is colour an everyday commitment for you or an awkward topic? Have you overcome a colour-phobia? Do you want to? Let us know and share your tips!

Thanks Megan!

mezzin' around.

On Friday, I mentioned that I was making baked spinach falafel, and a few people asked for the recipe, so I'm going to give it to you! Baking the falafel makes it healthier than frying it, and it's still really yummy. I think next time I'll do it in bigger balls/patties so that it's softer inside.

Ingredients:

• 100g baby spinach
• 400g can of chickpeas, drained
• 2 cloves garlic, crushed/finely chopped
• 2tsp cumin
• 1tsp coriander
• 100g plain flour
• half tsp baking powder
• herb of your choice (I used parsley)
• salt & pepper

Method:

• Pour a kettle of boiling water over spinach in a colander to wilt it.
• When it's cooled, squeeze out as much moisture as you can.
• Preheat oven to 180ºC.
• Chop garlic and spinach finely, or chuck it in a food processor.
• Mash up chickpeas (I found the end of a rolling pin worked brilliantly!) or chuck that in the food processor too.
• Add all the other ingredients to your taste, and mix to a dough.
• Roll into balls or patties, and place on a lightly oiled baking tray.
• Bake for 15mins, turn over, and bake for another 10mins, or until golden brown.

They're great served with a load of other meze dishes. Charli and I had ours in pitta bread with salads, tzatziki, humous and sweet chilli sauce. YUM!
