how do you want to be remembered?

how do you want to be remembered

I've been thinking for days about how I feel uninspired to write. I've had Beyonce - I Was Here stuck in my head all morning. And then it hit me - I can smoosh these two together and make a blog post out of it. #BlogSkillz

The reason that song is stuck in my head is because of a conversation I had not too long ago with one of my all time favourite humans, Bee. Our conversations never really end, and sometimes they get really weird.. but this was a poignant snippet for me. It really stuck with me.

We were discussing how we'd like to be remembered after we're gone.

Might sound a bit morbid to the regular person, but when you've been around illness and death, you're kind of predisposed to thinking about things like that. And it's much more positive than it sounds. Honest. Hear me out.

Sometimes it's nice to sit quietly and think about the positive qualities we have, remember the compliments that people have given us, and think about whether we deserve such titles (FYI - we do.)

Once we delved into how we hoped we'd be remembered, Bee said, "I think that's the best way to work out how to live. Just think about what you want people to talk about once you're gone."

And that keeps resonating throughout my days.

It's really made me think about how I want to live my life. Whether I'm happy with what I'm doing and how I'm acting. How I would be remembered if I disappeared now, whether I feel like I need to make any changes. Whether I've created anything that will live on after I'm gone.

To be perfectly honest, I think I'm doing pretty well with that. It's just nice to have this thought as a reminder when I'm making decisions, and it's always good to try and improve on what you're doing.

It doesn't have to mean anything crazy, any huge grand gestures. It's about what is important to you and your life.

While I'm a big believer of doing things to make yourself happy, it's definitely important to think about how what you do affects the people around you. While I don't believe other people's opinions should rule how you live, why take actions that hurt other people?

I want to be remembered for being kind, for being sensitive to myself and to others. For being funny. For striving to be positive and creative.

How would you like to be remembered, and do you need to change any of your attitudes?

  1. Lovely post Lyzi :) I work with the elderly and one of my favourite things is hearing their families talk about when they were younger - the things they'll remember. It's heartwarming!
I'd hope to be remembered as a good listener and someone who worked hard to achieve her dreams :)

  2. What an interesting thing to think about! I often ponder over a similar thing, where I think how would I feel about my life if I died (eek) today or even what kind of life would I like to look back on when I'm old and wrinkly. It's often a pretty good wake up call, and I think I'm on the right track at least!

Thanks for such an inspiring post :)

  3. What a lovely idea! I'm job hunting at the moment which is always a sure way to make me feel down on myself, but you've given me a really nice pick-me-up :)

  4. I've also been thinking about this topic - I recently lost my mum to a car accident and it was then that I realised it's so important to do what makes you happy now. She was on the organ donor register and saved 5 peoples lives - as well being an amazing person she will always be remembered as the lady who saved 5 peoples lives. You can be rem embed by people for the things you have done after your death too :)

Thanks for sharing your thoughts x x

  5. I want people to think that "she could have been so much more". Not sure why but it sounds comforting.

  6. I recently went to a pop-up death cafe run by the lovely and extraordinary Ru and Claire of the Green Funeral Company (http://www.thegreenfuneralcompany.co.uk) and this is a topic that would be good to bring up at the next one. It was so far from being a morbid event as it was uplifting, informative, moving, warm and friendly with tea and wonderful cakes too. It's not often that people have a chance to talk about life and death so freely and exchange their thoughts and experiences as well as their fears and hopes. We often think about how we remember others but don't explore how we would like to be remembered. It could be enlightening to know how others would remember us too as we all too easily dismiss ourselves as being unmemorable x

  7. I've been thinking about this recently too. And I think the overarching thing I'd like to be remembered for is being kind and thoughtful. I generally am as a person but sometimes I just need to be better at it and not fall into being negative or selfish.

  8. Loved this post, it really got me thinking. I'd like to be remembered as somebody who never gave up on her dreams, inspired others in some sort of way and spread positivity :)
