books for everybody!

Is there much better than escaping into a book? I loved reading when I was younger, but in my early 20s I was poorly and it affected my concentration - I could barely read a sentence, let alone take it in. Now, I'm getting back into it.

Books are such a lovely gift - they are something to keep and treasure, something to flick through again and again.

Here are five lovely books that would make great presents for all sorts of people!

I do enjoy shorter pieces of writing - not just because I can concentrate on them better. It's nice to have a book that you can dip in and out of as you please.

I'd never read any of Shirley Jackson's work before, but I think I may be a convert. The pieces in this book that I have read so far are wonderful - I really feel like I'm there! One short story in particular made me feel so uneasy, and the sudden and ambiguous ending whet my curiosity and made me so eager to read more!

"The deeper we sink, the deeper we want to go." - Donna Tartt

This lovely hardback book has illustrations strewn throughout, and if I didn't already have it, I'd love it as a gift!

You all must have heard of the online version of The Sartorialist, and maybe you're wondering why you need a physical copy of it. This is the third of Schuman's books, and personally I could do with having the other two as well.

It's so nice to flick through and find gorgeous outfits and little details that you love - every time I thumb through the pages I find something new and inspiring. If like me you sometimes struggle to get dressed in the morning, this will give you the motivation to look your best self.

LETTER FROM PARIS - THERESE - £9.15

This is one for the chick-lit lovers - i.e. not me.

I took this book on holiday a few months ago, and although it took me a few chapters to get into it, it was a nice easy read and I did find myself wanting to know what happened to the characters. It was rather predictable though, much like a chick-flick I guess.

If that's your bag you'll definitely enjoy this tale of fashion and complicated relationships.

How many things can be made from one tree?

I won't ruin the ending for you by answering that question.. this book is a lovely tale of creating things from one great ash tree. You can feel the tactility and care put into it.

One for those who love nature, crafting and creating.

I think I was having a bit of an emotional day when I first read this book - I ended up bawling my eyes out. It is a beautifully illustrated fable of love and loss, inspired by William Blake's Eternity, and the floral work of William Morris.

Obviously, I am a huge fan of the images and the way the book looks (everything from the cloth-bound cover to the colour scheme) but the fact that it also holds so much meaning puts it in a totally different league. It would be an amazing, thoughtful gift for anybody, any age.

I can see why Waterstones have named this their book of the year!

Are you giving any books for Christmas this year? Are there any you'd like to see under your tree?

Please recommend any in the comments!

  1. I adore Shirley Jackson, I didn't know she had a new book out! She has another collection of short stories you should check out if you enjoyed that, they're usually collected together with The Lottery which is her most famous.

  7. If it isn't in this collection, read Shirley Jackson's short story, 'The Lottery'. You'll love it - it's fabulously eerie! 'The Tooth' is also a great one :)
