soukitchen, bristol.

I'm lucky enough to live in a lovely area of Bristol. Less than 5 minutes from my front door is North Street - a whole street of lovely independent shops, bars and restaurants. One of my favourite of these is Soukitchen, and I thought I'd show you why.

This little restaurant can get pretty busy, so I always recommend booking. You can see from a quick glance of their Twitter profile that they serve absolutely beautiful food, but you'll have to visit to realise that the taste really does match the aesthetics.

First up, the drinks. Pomegranate & orange blossom for Nick, and rose & elderflower for me, which came with delicate petals scattered in it! Pretty AND delicious. And would be amazing with gin...

We decided to start with the chef's dips & flatbreads, which were all so yummy. It was hard to choose a favourite, and I don't know why we even tried. There were flavours of celeriac, curried lentil, carrot.. they were all our favourite.

For our mains, I had the chicken skewers, and Nick had ghalieh mahi, which is a Persian fish curry. I'd actually had the chicken skewers the last time I went, but they were so tasty that I couldn't resist having them again! I have absolutely no idea how they get so many stunning flavours into one simple dish. The fish curry is probably the least attractive dish, but don't let the sludgy appearance fool you - the thick, dark sauce is surprisingly light. It's aromatic and not too spicy, and the fish was perfectly cooked - just tender and falling apart.

We finished with a chocolate mousse layered with caramel and some kind of fruity thing on the top. I was not a fan of the fruity jammy thing, but the rest of the mousse was smooth and creamy. I've seen a few photos of their new desserts and they look so pretty.

Basically, go there. If you live anywhere in or near Bristol, it is absolutely worth the trip. I'm looking forward to seeing their new menu & maybe trying their brunch one weekend soon!
